Here Comes the Sun

Friday at last, my friends!

If you tuned in for WIP Wednesday, then you know it's been a busy week over here! I can hardly express how glad I am that it's Friday. Things don't really slow down on the weekend, but Hubster is home, and that makes all the difference.

While I have a truly exciting line up of FriYAY Friends interviews coming soon, today I'm bringing you one of my own quilts in celebration of selling it to a friend of mine this week. She's been asking me to sell it since she first laid eyes on it, but it took me a solid month to be ready to part with it because, frankly, I'm darn proud of it as my first quilt of my own design. Also, I made it from Moda Scrap Bags that I managed to get hold of before this fabulous fabric line was even released! But I'm getting ahead of myself a bit.

First of all, this quilt was originally envisioned as yellow, orange, green, and blue. But then Hubster, who knew I'd been looking for the perfect way to use my Thicket scrap bags, said, "What if it was black and white?" And I replied, "I don't know; let me go cut some fabric."

Second, I LOVE Stacie Bloomfield. A lot. (And she's going to be a FriYAY Friend here soon! Squee!). She is the mind behind Gingiber, and the designer of Thicket. Hence my compulsion to scour the quilting world for early bits of this fabric after the Sample Spree at Spring Quilt Market.

So I cut and arranged and pieced, and Hubster said, "Look-- it's a sun rising over the skyline!" And by golly, he was right. I think it was in me somewhere, but for him to see what I hadn't yet realized was exciting. I pieced a back of strips to be a "Thicket Sampler" and tucked in selvages both on the back and in the binding (Because did I mention I love Stacie? #shamelessfangirl). Here Comes the Sun is pieced with a grey Aurifil thread, quilted with yellow and teal Aurifil, and has additional hand-stitching with DMC Embroidery Thread and finished at about 26x36 inches.

And coming up? Here Comes the Sun 2.0 with 4" squares, punctuated with lots of photos of the process so I can bring y'all a pattern that emphasizes the importance of color value in quilting. Gray scale work is hard, y'all. But, oi, does it look great when we get it right!

Happy Weekend Quilting!

Much love,

HollyAnne
