How To Practice Free Motion Quilting (and actually get better)

A free 60-minute live class for the quilter who is tired of dreaming about free motion quilting and ready to actually do the thing.

Join me LIVE by saving your seat now:

    You’ve seen the videos:

The swirls. The feathers. The gorgeous all-over designs moving under the needle like it's the most natural thing in the world.

And you've thought: I wonder what that feels like.

Maybe you've even tried — pulled out a practice sandwich, lowered the needle, moved the quilt forward — and then stopped. Because it didn't look like the tutorial.

Because it felt awkward and wrong.

    Wanna know a secret?

Awkward and wrong is actually part of the learning process.

The problem isn't your talent or your ability to draw.

    It's your practice method.

Most quilters practice the wrong way — and then conclude they're just not cut out for this. In reality, they just need a better system for building the skill. Let me show you during Band Camp.

    What You’ll Learn

In this free 60-minute live class, I'm going to show you:

    • How to set up your machine and space so it works WITH you — better posture, cleaner tension, and a setup that actually makes free motion quilting feel possible.

    • How to learn a quilting motif — because just throwing a practice sandwich under the needle and moving the fabric higgledy piggledy is not it

    • How to read your practice sandwich — so you know exactly what's working, what isn't, and what to do about it. Your practice sandwich is data. I'll show you how to use it.

    • How to know when you're ready to move to a real quilt — because "ready" isn't a feeling. It's a measurable thing and I'll give you the benchmark.

By the end of Band Camp, you’ll have a practice plan to use right away to confidently go from “open minded beginner” to “Quilting Rockstar!”

    THIS IS FOR YOU IF...

    • You've tried free motion quilting and felt like you were doing it wrong but couldn't figure out why.
    • You have a pile of quilt tops waiting and you're not sure your skills are ready for them yet.
    • You've been “practicing” but don't feel like you're actually getting better.
    • You bought a machine — maybe a big, beautiful, expensive machine — and it's been sitting in the corner waiting for you to feel ready.
    • You're done with straight lines and pantographs and you're ready to actually stitch the beautiful motifs you admire.

THIS IS NOT FOR YOU IF...

    • You're already confidently finishing your own quilts and loving every minute of it. (In that case — huzzah! 🎸 But send this to a quilting friend who needs it.)

    Meet Your Teacher

HollyAnne Knight has been teaching quilters to finish their own quilts for over a decade — at shows, guilds, and shops around the world, and inside her signature program Quilting Rockstar University.

She believes that free motion quilting is not an advanced skill reserved for experienced quilters. It's a learnable skill that any quilter can develop with the right system and a teacher who is actually in her corner.

She will be insufferably enthusiastic about your progress.

    FAQ

    • Yes. Completely. No catch, no credit card, no "free trial." Just show up and learn.

    • Tune in from your sewing room with a practice sandwich— a small quilt sandwich of fabric, batting, and backing — so you can try things in real time as we go.

A domestic sewing machine with a free motion or hopping foot is helpful but not required to get value from the class.

    • No, Band Camp is live only. Which means the energy in the room is real, your questions get answered in real time, and you actually have a reason to show up instead of saving it for "later."

Pick the session that works for you and be there.

    • Band Camp is a free, standalone class. You don't need to be a QRU member to attend and there's no obligation to join anything afterward. That said, if you love what you learn and want to keep going, QRU is where we go deeper. 😘

    • If you can move a quilt under a needle — or you want to learn how — then yes. Band Camp meets you where you are.

    • If you've been quilting for years and you're still not finishing your own quilts the way you imagine — no, this is not too basic. This is exactly for you.

    Your quilt tops are waiting.
    Your machine is ready.

The only thing left is you. showing up for sixty minutes and finally learning how to make this work.

Free. Live. No replay. Show up and get better.
