Summer Stash Busting 2019 :: Finish-A-Long

As the weather warms up, it’s a perfect time to freshen up our sewing spaces with a bit of cleaning out and finishing up. This year, for the 2nd Annual Summer Stash Busting, we’re focusing on works in progress. It’s easy for half pieced quilts and finished tops to pile up— let’s get them done!

Y’all, I am SO excited and SO ready for this year’s Summer Stash Busting. If you’re already a member of the Quilting Rockstars Facebook Group, you know I’ve been working ahead a little bit knocking out a few WIPs in anticipation of proper stash busting. Now, if you joined us last year, you know we spent summer 2018 talking a lot about how to use up fabric we already have. If you missed it, you’ll find those posts here. This year, I want us to focus on unfinished quilts. And this year— there are prizes!

Schedule

2019 Goal: For each of us to finish 4 WIPS (works in progress) over the next 8-9 weeks

These topics are skills I will be using to finish my four WIPs during Summer Stash Busting. In addition, I’ll be resharing posts from last year that I think you’ll find useful as you tackle your own WIPs.

(Titles will be made bold and hyperlinked as we go along. Each week will include a blog post and Facebook Live)

Week 1 (May 2): Tackling Big Quilt on the Domestic

Week 2 (May 9): Basic Ruler Work on the Domestic

Week 3 (May 16): Quilting Plans for Negative Space

Week 4 (May 23): Thoughts on Stash Culture

Week 5 (May 30): Introduction to Y- Seams

Week 6 (June 6): Stitch in the Ditch on the Longarm

Week 7 (June 13): (Sick Week)

Week 8 (June 20): Quilt Labels with Kate Toney of Tough Kitten Crafts

Finish-A-Long Registration

Last year, I challenged us to work with fabric from our stashes exclusively or nearly exclusively for 8 weeks. This year, we will tackle four WIPs (works in progress) and get them done to create some mental, emotional, and creative breathing room in our sewing spaces. Of course you can work at any pace you please over these 8 weeks, but for folks like me who need a little extra oomph and a deadline, I’m offering an official Finish-A-Long!

How the Finish-A-Long Works: By registering for the FAL, you’ll commit to which four WIPs you will be working on and what stage of completion you will get to by the deadline (cut pieces to a complete top; a top to a finished quilt; putting the dang binding on, etc). You will have 2 weeks for each WIP, and the goal is for you to wrap up some of those projects that have been sitting around forever and really just need a little extra push to get done and out.

WIP Deadlines: May 11; May 25th; June 8; and June 22nd. WiPs will be submitted via round-up post in the Quilting Rockstars each week or via #RockstarFAL on Instagram

Registration Perks: Registered participants in the Finish-A-Long will receive four fabric labels (one for each of their WIPs; pictured above) commemorating Summer Stash Busting 2019 and will be eligible to receive prizes. (Huzzah!)

Prizes: A random winner will be chosen after each WIP deadline from among registered participants who get their WIP to the pledged state of completion. Participants who finish all four WIPs on time will be eligible for the Grand Prize. WIP prizes will be sponsored by Aurifil, Hobbs Batting, and others, and the Grand Prize is sponsored by me. (If prizes cannot be shipped internationally, I will provide a prize to the international winner)

Grand Prize: A seat in the Fall Rockstar Status Free Motion Quilting Course ($150 value) OR $150 USD of custom long arming services (winner’s choice).

Registration Cost: $20 - Registration now CLOSED
(You are welcome to sew along with us on your own without registering, but Finish-A-Long labels and prize eligibility are only included for official registrants)
