Product Review: Daylight Wafer Light Box

A light box is a long-standing staple in the craft room for tracing patterns and aligning pieces, but clunky, rattling light boxes are blessedly a thing of the past thanks to the Daylight Company Wafer.

My earliest memory of a light box is of a bulky aluminum and plastic contraption that rattled a lot and felt like it might fall apart at any moment. When I began quilting and heard about folks using light boxes for embroidery, appliqué, paper piecing, etc, I cringed. It sounded inconvenient and frustrating.

Then I received a gifted Daylight Company Wafer light box in 2018. Game. Changer.

The Details

The Daylight Company Wafer Light Box uses the latest technology to create a slim and durable light surface for all your crafting needs. It features an on-surface ruler for easy size and scale reference, dimmable light feature, optional translucent cutting mat for trimming directly over the light surface. Yes— this surface is sturdy enough to handle the pressure of rotary cutting! In fact, the first time I saw this light box at QuiltCon, one of Daylight’s demos was to throw the Wafer on the concrete floor and jump on it. The Wafer didn’t have a scratch afterward!

The Wafer comes in three sizes (9 x 12 inches, 11 x 14 inches, and 18 x 24 inches). I think the smallest size (The Wafer 1) is perfect for most makers.

My favorite features of the Wafer are its brightness for clear visibility, its durability for rotary cutting, and its slim profile for easy storage (I usually just slide it behind a bookshelf when I’m not using it. And smaller models can slide easily into a drawer). If you’re in the market for a new light box, I can’t recommend the Daylight Wafer enough!
